Verizon’s newer smartphones deliver astonishing user experiences, but they also bring some unexpected annoyances. One of the most common, and most surprising, is a loud beep that surprises users when they make or receive calls.
What is Causing the Beep?
The beep you hear is Verizon’s Message Waiting Indicator (MWI). The MWI activates whenever a voicemail message is left for a user, causing the phone to beep when making or receiving a call. The MWI beep is intended to be an alert of a new voicemail, but for most users it’s simply an annoying interruption.
How To Stop the Beep
Fortunately, you don’t have to live with the beep; there are a few different methods you can use to turn the MWI off.
In Settings
The easiest way to stop the MWI beep is to turn it off in settings. On your phone, go to ‘Settings -> Music & Sounds -> Other Sounds -> Message Waiting Indicator’ and then toggle off the MWI.
Using the AT&T Message Center
If you can’t find the MWI option in settings, you can try turning it off through the AT&T Message Center. Log in to your AT&T account on your computer or phone, and then navigate to ‘Voicemail -> Settings -> Message Waiting Indicator’. Toggle off the MWI to disable the beep.
Contacting Verizon Support
If you still can’t turn the MWI beep off, you may need to contact Verizon support. Open the Verizon support page and then click on ‘Help with My Device’. Follow the prompts to contact Verizon support, and then explain the problem and ask for help disabling the MWI.
Verizon smartphones are powerful and feature-rich, but the MWI beep can quickly become an annoyance. Fortunately, it’s easy to turn the MWI off; just follow one of the steps above to stop the beep from interrupting your calls.
