Where Are Pimentos in Wal Mart?
Pimento has long been an ingredient in WalMart Mexican Market products. They have one of the largest pimento sections in Mexico, and they are a huge part of the local market here. Recently however, the situation has changed. Pimentos and other ingredients used to be a big part of WalMart’s tortilla offerings. Now tortillas seem to be on the menu more often, and not just chicken nachos.
So what happened? Well, first off, the tortilleria section of Walmart has closed. It is unclear at this time whether this was a regional decision or a national one. Either way, it means that pimento is no longer available in this store. I am not sure when they will bring it back, but it may take a while. If you are going to buy pimento, now might be the time to get it from Walmart.
Another change is their frozen food section. Gone are the tortilla chips and salsa. In their place, they now offer pita sandwiches with black beans, olives, and cheddar cheese. I love to see smaller changes like this, because it reminds me of how the business was in smaller cities. Small towns didn’t have nearly the same competition as bigger towns do today.
As a shopper, I have always had a problem finding fresh ingredients anywhere. I don’t know if this is part of the reason why WalMart never brought pimento. I would imagine that because the product is so popular with shoppers in Texas, they think they would sell better if only they had kept it in stock here. It is definitely a good thing that they are bringing it back though. I am always looking for new flavors and trying to locate the best ones. The world needs a little pimento.
If you are not a fan of pimento, WalMart has also pulled out cheddar. They are calling it Mexican cheddar but no one I have talked to seems to know the difference. I was able to find both at the same store and have bought both. In my opinion, the taste is quite different. WalMart has also added macaroni and cheese and sour cream to the mix. Now I’m looking forward to trying those.
When are you going to buy next pimento from Walmart? I will be going back, probably after the holidays, as I am constantly in search of new Mexican flavors to add to my diet. Until then, I will be happy to stock up on these little gems.
