While some stores do experience an increase in sales during certain seasons or months of the year, other stores like Walmart experience a slump in sales when the weather gets cold or shopping season starts. Stores usually offer some kind of final discount during their slow times. Wal-Mart is no different. However, customers will have to wait until the middle of winter or later for that final big discount. Other stores may offer last minute deals, but this is not usually the case at Walmart and generally not during the slowest times of the season.
Stores may also experience some type of “closing” for one reason or another. A store may have to close for repairs, to free up space for new merchandise, to make room for the new inventory that will be arriving in the next few months and to make room for the new stock that may be arriving after Wal-Mart’s purchase of many of its competitors. While some closings are temporary, Wal-Mart’s policy of having stores remain closed on very rare occasions (usually holidays) is not one of them. It’s not called closing the store for the month because it doesn’t make any money. It’s called closing the store for the month to give customers a reason to come back again next year.
Stores will sometimes hold onto merchandise for quite a while, even though there isn’t enough of it to sell. Sometimes the store will lose a couple of customers, but overall the store is doing quite well. Then over the course of the next few weeks or months, the store will bring back a few of its most popular items, perhaps move some of the seasonal merchandise to a higher floor, and then sell the rest of its inventory at a deeply discounted price. It may also sell some of its discontinued items at a cheaper price.
On extremely bad days, some of Wal-Mart’s stores will close for a period of time. The worst days for the largest of its stores are usually Christmas Eve and New Years Day. Some of its smallest retail locations will also close for a few days out of the year. When does a store close for the holidays? Retailers wait until the end of December, before beginning their sales push in January, but some will sell out of holiday merchandise in January or even earlier.
When will you know when a store will close? Retailers don’t open their stores for two weeks in advance, but by the time of the sale, you should be able to tell whether or not they have any new merchandise available. You can usually find out when a store has sold out of certain merchandise online. For those who wait until the last minute to shop, they might miss the opportunity to save big on big ticket items.
