How Long Can Cream Cheese Last?
How long can cream cheese last? It depends on a lot of factors, the most important one being how it’s stored. Most people store their cream cheese in a plastic airtight container within a cool and dry place. Although it’s the cheapest and easiest to store, this isn’t always the best choice for all types of cheeses.
Cream cheeses that are stored in this fashion are prone to mold. If the cheese is kept in a plastic airtight container for a long period of time, moisture will start to set in. The moisture encourages the growth of molds which eventually lead to cheese that is uneaten. Also, if you store your cheese in this manner for too long it’ll begin to lose its taste. The longer you store it the more water it loses.
It’s best to avoid using plastic airtight containers in the home if possible. This doesn’t mean that you can’t use them for certain casseroles or desserts though. You may have a difficult time finding an airtight container that’s not going to leak and leave some air in it. Another option is to use aluminum. This is a sturdy metal and although it won’t last as long as plastic it will be much sturdier.
How long can cream cheese last outside? Well you could actually store it outside for up to a few days if it’s stored properly. Always store in dry and airtight containers though. When you get to the end of your trip or when you come back it’s a good idea to put it back in its original container.
How long can cream cheese last in other ways? There are different ways you can store it for maximum storage time. Plastic containers are great but they aren’t particularly sturdy. Aluminum is a little bit sturdier and although it can’t last as long you can cover it up with another container or a pillow case. If you use dish soap or something else that could potentially stain it though you wouldn’t want to leave it out in the open where anyone could see it.
So, how long can cream cheese last in your refrigerator? You can store it for a couple of months but that’ll be a very long time. You probably shouldn’t keep any longer than a month at most in there. If you can find the time to let it sit outside in the sunshine for a few hours each day that would be great.
