It’s the Fourth of July again and you have to pick up your flag and take it down at the local patriotic pride parade. What is heb? It is a celebration of the United States and their ideals. What is heb if not just one more chance to glorify the greatest nation ever created? What is heb if not the opportunity to kick back and loosen up.
The Fourth of July has always been about the spirit of America. It is our affirmation that we are a melting pot of people of various ethnic backgrounds, cultures and moral perspectives. It is our acknowledgement of a sense of national pride and identity. In a country that seems to be struggling with identity issues and mass forgetting, it is refreshing to observe that the patriotic impulses of the Fourth of July remain intact.
It is unfortunate that we live in a day and age when there is so much negative commentary associated with patriotism. One common comment is that there is too much talk of national unity by a small group of politically correct mouthpieces. I would like to point out to the world, especially those who claim to speak for our nation, that it is not all about the press being out to get us or the government being too busy to worry about our well-being. In a free society, it is not okay to trample all over the Constitution and infringe upon individual rights. Our freedoms are precious and need to be protected.
I’m not saying that we shouldn’t celebrate or should bury the flag. I am saying that we should remember our traditions and not allow those who would dishonor our forefathers to steal the thunder of our thunder. I don’t believe in the redistribution of happiness. I don’t believe in the redistribution of wealth. I don’t believe in affirmative action.
All I’m saying is that we shouldn’t allow the media to call a parade a celebration of Nationalism. If the media is calling a parade a celebration of Nationalism then we should not do that either. We should instead call it a Fourth of July parade. After all, what is the national symbol anyway, the American Flag? A banner to fly atop a tent?
The American Flag is a symbol of brotherhood and equality. It is also the symbol of freedom. Why give away your freedoms for a National Flag that flies only half-staff? What happens when the government finds out about this kind of behavior?
