Does Walmart own Dollar General? This is a question that I get asked quite frequently by Dollar Store discount shoppers. The simple answer is no, they do not own this popular retail outlet and it was not founded by them.
A lot of people are unfamiliar with the name and many aren’t sure what this chain has done to become one of America’s largest dollar stores. There are two different types of Dollar General stores. One is located in the heart of downtown Kansas City, Missouri, while the other is located in suburban Chicago, Illinois. And the other stores are located all over the country, including Texas and Florida.
So, does Wal-Mart own the popular dollar stores named Dollar General? No, they don’t own these stores. But they do own and operate many other locations across the country and across the world. In fact, more than 400 stores are operated by this giant discount superstore. In fact, it is so large that the average American family may have trouble keeping up with all of its products.
For example, a family in California may be looking for a particular product and may find that they can’t find it at their local store. They might try the local dollar store and find it is out of stock. Or, they might drive to another store and find that the same product is available, but on a much higher price. It is impossible to buy any of these products from just anywhere, including your local grocery store. That is why I believe that the answer is “no”, the stores are not owned by Wal-Mart, but they do sell products that are sold in the stores.
In addition, it should also be noted that many of the products offered by the dollar stores are carried at other retailers and not just by the store. For example, you will find shampoo at grocery stores other than Wal-Mart, and so does paint. You will find baby items at other stores other than Wal-Mart, as well as toys, books, clothing, and home items. These are all carryovers from other retailers, not products sold by the dollar store.
So, does Wal-Mart own the dollar stores? The answer is no, although some of the products may be offered for very low prices. The fact remains, the dollar stores are not a part of the Wal-Mart business model, but rather a separate one. In my next articles, I will provide additional information about the dollar stores and their exact location. Keep reading.
